CommSy - The Community System
CommSy stands for ‘Community System’. Its main focus is independent and coop-erative learning. Surpassing the acquisition of technical competence, the building of social and media-oriented compentence is one of its central goals. This is especially required in dealing with the challenges of the often discussed knowledge society, which is marked by terms such as ‘life-long learning’, ‘knowledge management’ or ‘virtual teamwork’. ,,CommSy supports the collaborative building and expansion of knowledge during project-oriented learning. As a web-based system built with the freely distributed Internet technologies Apache Web-Server, the script language PHP as well as the MySQL databank, CommSy offers two basic functionalities:,• CommSy Project Rooms provide support for communications in closed work groups of one community. ,• The CommSy Community Room provide support for communications of the total community. It serves as a business card for the community and a direction sign for the Project Rooms and for a semi-public, topical collection of all kinds of materials.,,For all its components, CommSy follows two essential design principles:,• Simplicity: This goal is achieved through the implementation of an adequate functionality, a clearly structured user interface, as well as through easy-to-handle access options a via Web browser without additional installation re-quirements of, for example, Plug-Ins or Java. ,• Responsible Usage in the Community: A minimum of government of access rights and permittance of user-created contributions only foster equal and coop-erative work. All participants can use all functionalities without limitations. All contents are presented to all participants in the same way.,,Since October 1999, CommSy, hosted on a server serviced by the CommSy team, has been used at more than 500 events and by more than 6,000 users. The latest CommSy version 2.x is used countrywide at more than 20 universities and at more than 30 faculties, at schools, for the ongoing education of teachers, and by various extracurricular learning and studying communities.
